Essaouria is a beautiful, colourful town in which to spend both an exciting and relaxing day. This former Portuguese fishing village has a charming medina of souqs and is surrounded by ancient ramparts that boast the most incredible view of the Atlantic coastline. The medina is a UNESCO World Heritage listed site and exploring its depths is definitely a great way to spend the day.
Your day can be spent however you choose – lying on the beautiful sandy beaches, take a guided tour to see the most notable sights, take to the seas to try out surfing, kayaking or kite-surfing with the locals, or even visit Jimi Hendrix’ house on a camel. Essaouria was a notable pitstop during the 60’s and 70’s for the likes of Jimi, Bob Marley and Cat Stevens, which has shaped the atmosphere and vibe of the seaside town as it is today. If you are lucky enough to visit in June, you may witness the Gnaoua Music Festival, a four-day showcase of the best Moroccan music acts as well as some international headliners.
Enjoy a fresh seafood lunch at the markets where you can ‘pick n’mix’ from the daily catch and have it cooked and served up to you with a multitude of accompaniments – a truly local experience!
